The universe is whole and complete in itself but when a situation or event arises which causes an imbalance or trauma in the interconnecting morphic fields either within our family relations or any group of people sometimes over generations, the universe (which also includes our own individuality) seeks to redeem this imbalance in a 'future' existence within this interconnected group, whether by DNA or other kind of resonance, i.e. a present lifetime. The universe is not concerned with time so whether this occurs in the past or future is irrelevant, it just is. This redemption or remuneration could take the form of an imbalance, blockage or illness which you yourself have to sort out. The universe is impersonal, it seeks only balance, therefore it is not personal and is not your fault. All that is required is that you take responsibility for yourself and your own awareness where others before you had failed, and in this manner your descendents will not have to bear the brunt of any karma you generated or did not deal with in this lifetime, and perhaps your ancestors will be free of theirs, too. Really, it has to be dealt with now, as now is all there is. Even if these descendents are physically dead their karma is still carried on through their descendents until a resolution is reached, as it is only energy seeking balance.
