Are you Spiritual But Not Religious?

According to polls over 30% of Americans consider themselves spiritual but not religious. Are you one? I am. When I first saw this statistic, I was amazed. I thought, what a huge proportion of the population! I mean, consider that in the face of the fact that only 22% of Americans consider themselves Republicans or 24% of Americans consider themselves to be Catholic. A staggering number of individuals are spiritual but not religious.

We are HUGE! But, are we really similar?

What do you do or believe that makes you spiritual but not religious?

  • I’m one of the 30%! Spirituality allows me to be free in my soul, to be in the flow of MY life, to choose what feels best for me. My spirituality expands and grows daily as I learn more about myself, the Universe, and all its inhabitants. Spirituality has allowed me to feel deeply connected to ALL that is, all that has been or ever will be.

  • i would imagine that 30% is a lot higher than that, as I , along with possibly many others did not know about, or take part in the survey. I consider myself to be spiritual, but not religeous. Nor do I believe in any gods as ominpotent beings. I believe that our spirit is the essence of our being.

  • People just don’t go to churches as much as they used to. I think that in past generations churches and religion were people’s only social network. They went there for communion with their God, but also for the communion with other people. Now that we have facebook, twitter, skype, linkedin, myspace,…… and blogs, there is less need to get out to create that connection. I never followed a formal religion or went to church for may spiritual nourishment, but I did end up finding a church about three years ago that did not have tenants or rules but believed in the “One God, many Paths” philosophy. I go to the church for my connection to like-minded people and it also helps me to remember that I am a spiritual being having a human experience NOT a human being having a spiritual experience.

    Blessings,
    Sherry

  • Religion creates an “us versus them” way of thinking – full of exclusion and judgment. Spirituality allows us the freedom to choose love in all ways and remember that we are all from the same source – that we are all one!
